Practicing the Way of Jesus Together
At Frontier, we don’t just talk about following Jesus – we practice it.
Spiritual practices are how we open our lives to God. They help us slow down, listen, confess, rest, and respond to the Spirit’s work in us and through us.
We don’t practice these things to earn God’s love – we already have it. We practice because we want to be formed by Jesus, not conformed to the world.
The Practices
“Devote youreselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.”
– Colossians 4:2
Prayer is our ongoing conversation with God. It’s more than asking – it’s listening, surrendering, interceding, and aligning with God’s heart.
We include moments of guided prayer each week, and encourage people to pray naturally and often. Sometimes we pray in silence. Sometimes we pray aloud together.
Try It: Ask God to speak into your day. Then pause and listen. Prayer doesn’t need to be long – just real.
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
– Psalm 46:10
Silence helps us become present. It pushes back against distraction and opens space to encounter God.
In a world that never stops talking, we practice being still. We breathe. We listen. We wait.
Try It: Set a timer for 3 minutes. Sit in silence. Breathe deeply. Repeat a phrase like, “Here I am, Lord.” any time your mind begins to wander.
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.”
– Colossians 3:16
We don’t just study Scripture – we soak in it.
We practice Lectio Divina, a slow, prayerful reading of the Bible. We ask the Spirit to speak to us through the Word, and we make space for response.
Try It: Read a short passage 2-3 times. Notice a word or phrase that stands out to you. Ask, “God, what are you saying to me through this?”
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us…”
– 1 John 1:9
Confession is how we name what’s real and receive what’s true.
We encourage each other to make space to reflect and bring our sins, our struggles, and shame into the light. We remind one another: Grace is greater.
Try It: Tell God one thing you’ve been carrying. Then hear this truth: “In Christ, you are forgiven, loved, and made new.”
“Freely you have received; freely give.”
– Matthew 10:8
Giving is an act of worship. It forms us into people who trust God more than money and love others more than comfort.
We encourage our people to practice radical generosity. We encourage one another to give of our finances, our time, and our skills.
Try It: This week, give intentionally. Help a neighbor. Encourage someone. Or give financially as an act of trust and worship.
“The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.”
– Mark 2:27
We live in a nonstop world. But that is not what God intended for us. The creation week in Genesis sets a rhythm of life we were meant to imitate. Not as a rule or checklist, but as a grace and mercy. God calls us to rest. He calls us to rest from work and to rest to Him.
Sabbath is our way of saying, “I am not defined by what I produce. I am loved as I rest.” It is a way of saying “You are God and I am not. The world will carrying on without me today. It is an act of trust and surrender.”
Try It: “This Saturday try to intentionally unplug from work, from phones, from the constant chatter of our world. Delight in what is good. Rest with God.”
“When you fast, do not look somber … but fast in secret, and your Father will reward you.”
– Matthew 6:16-18
Fasting is the practice of letting go – of food, habits, or distractions – to make space for God.
It helps us reset our hunger – not just physically, but spiritually. Fasting reminds us that God is our true sustainer.
Try It: “Skip one meal and use the time to pray or read Scripture. Ask God to fill what you’re giving up.”
Why We Practice Together
We don’t do these things alone. These are shared habits that we talk about and encourage one another to participate in, because these habits shape our life together.
They help us:
- Be still in a restless world
- Stay grounded in truth
- Live out our faith with purpose
- Become people of love, grace, and wisdom
